The Precious Child Foundation is very excited to be partnering with Wells for Ghana this year for our Walk For Water event! As you might be wondering, "Who is Wells for Ghana?" we wanted to introduce you to the man who brought clean water for the first time to people in Ghana and Tanzania, touching more than 600,000 people after 33 trips to both countries and by drilling over 1,175 wells!
In 2006, Kenny Wood, owner of Lifetime Well Drilling Company in Denton, Maryland, sold a used truck mounted drilling rig to a church group to use for a mission project in Ghana. Asked to travel to Ghana to provide training for the equipment operation, he didn't expect to be appalled and moved by the women and children he saw walking more than six miles to haul dirty water in assorted containers on their heads. Mr. Wood saw a need that quickly became his passion to help those less fortunate by using his forty years of well drilling experience.
Mr. Wood is also a member of Centreville Rotary Club and has received recognition and contributions from Rotary Clubs across the country to aid these humanitarian efforts, but Mr. Wood has carried more than 90% of the costs himself to drill water wells. He has been featured on the NBC Today Show and has been named to the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. Mr. Wood has said, "When I consider that I can bring clean water to a person for the first time at an average cost of about $3.50 per person, it's a no brainer as to how I should be spending my life."
In the last eight years, Mr. Wood has made 33 trips to Ghana and Tanzania, drilling over 1,200 water wells. He has donated and shipped three truck mounted drilling rigs and associated equipment. Through these processes of drilling water wells, Mr. Wood has been moved by the expressions of gratitude by those whose lives have been touched. One village demonstrated its gratitude with a 4.5 hour dance ceremony performed by 1,500 villagers to say "Thank You." They also gave him the name, Chief Living Water.
Just last year, Mr. Wood learned that a village in Tanzania lost ten children to crocodiles when they went to the river for water. He has since drilled three water wells for this village, eliminating the risk of future similar tragedies.
To learn more about Mr. Wood and Wells for Ghana, go to www.wellsforghana.com. We are thankful to partner with Mr. Wood and his teams this year to drill more wells in Ghana. This year's goal to drill three wells can be provided for a cost of about $3,500 per well. Because Wells for Ghana only asks for the cost of supplies, the cost for each well is significantly reduced.
-Pump $1,500
-Pipe $700
-Labor $250
-Fuel $600 per day
-Repairs ?
Approximately $3,500 per well
Just as Kenny Wood sees the simplicity in knowing his purpose of drilling water wells for less than $4 per person is a no brainer, we should be able to reason that walking in this year's Walk For Water event is just as simple. Joining us to walk can make a profound change in someone else's life and will truly make a difference.
